Attention all moms! The Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC) released the top ten toxic chemicals that are suspected to cause autism and learning disabilities in children. If you think that going green and jumping on the bandwagon with the rest of us planet-pushers has been all talk and no real threat, we are all in for an unpleasant surprise.
The center for disease reported last month that 1 in 88 American children is now affected by autism. A growing epidemic that has been linked to environmental causes.

Yes ladies, toxins in our cosmetics are still a prevalent issue and there are still many companies and brands that have potentially toxic ingredients in their products.
In addition to reading your labels here’s a little reminder of 10 ingredients you still need to avoid in your cosmetics…
1. Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl)- These are a large group of chemicals used as preservatives in cosmetics to prevent bacteria, yeast, and mold formations in products such as toothpaste. They are found in everything from moisturizers to shampoos and deodorants to baby lotions.
The Dirty Details: This chemical may impair fertility; alter hormone levels; increase risks for certain types of cancers; alter... The Health Cost of Black Women’s Hair Products

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is constantly working on our behalf to change legislation in the cosmetics industry. They’re also pushing the envelope in making sure that black women know exactly what’s in our products and how we can protect ourselves from harmful chemicals. While pulling articles and working on posts for this week I came across an old article on their website that’s worth sharing with you all. Check it out below:

There is a striking lack of mainstream news coverage of the health hazards posed by beauty... The Fight is On To Brand “Cruelty-Free” With A Legal Definition to Avoid Consumer Confusion

In the world of cosmetics and food companies notorious for green washing products to deceive unsuspecting consumers, the online trade journal, Cosmetics Design, announced that University researchers have challenged law makers to set a legal definition for the term ‘cruelty-free’ in order to protect consumers, having found that many misunderstand products featuring these labels.
When I think cruelty-free I automatically assume that the product I am purchasing was not tested on animals nor do any of the ingredients in the products themselves contain any animal by-products. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and major companies like Avon, MaryKay and Estee Lauder created a big offense by leading consumers astray... When Fashion+Beauty+Health+Education = Environmental Justice

If you’ve ever seen the movies Shirley and Laverne or A League of Their Own then you know Geena Davis. Yesterday, I was part of the audience at Seattle’s Town Hall, listening in on the conversations of how girls can save the world. Actress Geena Davis and Chris Grumm, former CEO of the Women’s Funding Network exchanged ideas on the challenges and solutions to achieving a world where all have equal opportunity, regardless of gender.

Saturday morning, as I sat on the train going from Seattle to Portland, I came a cross an article online addressing the issues of environmental injustice in minority communities that I wanted to share with you all. Instead of summarizing the article, I thought that it be best for me to simply just re-post it and share with you the notions of EPA’s phenomenal administrator Lisa P. Jackson working on behalf of our communities.
EPA chief Lisa P. Jackson says it’s not about loving nature — it’s a civil rights issue.

There’s a lot of babble going on in the cosmetics industry and mainly because consumers like me and you are getting hold to buzz-friendly ingredient words that are extremely controversial. I’m sure you’ve seen me throw around the word endocrine disruptor once or twice when talking about toxic ingredients. I read a rather challenging article in this month’s issue of GCI magazine 0utlining that there is no real definition of ED but that it has definitely become a major health concern. The editor of GCI challenged that no matter how much evidence these buzz-friendly ingredients can indicate safety, that by popular demand they are certified toxic and have most of us going crazy about keeping them out of...
