My First & Fabulous Attempt At Loc Knots

My First & Fabulous Attempt At Loc Knots This past weekend in preparation for my trip to my aunt’s wedding I decided to go ahead and try out the loc knots I learned from Franchesca Ramsey aka chescaleigh’s tutorial. I was a bit skeptical as I typically curl my hair via braiding it into small braids or using pipe cleaners (also learned via chescaleigh) but I’ll have to say that it came out well.   Here’s how I accomplished the mission: Thoroughly washed and conditioned my hair with Giovanni Organics Tea Tree Shampoo and Deep Moisture Conditioner Towel dried my locks and conditioned them with olive oil gently massaging the oil into my hair especially on those dry brittle areas where I have some color left over Followed the video below     Here are the...

10 Chemicals Most Likely to Cause Autism.... Many Found in Personal Care Products Image Source Attention all moms! The Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC) released the top ten toxic chemicals that are suspected to cause autism and learning disabilities in children. If you think that going green and jumping on the bandwagon with the rest of us planet-pushers has been all talk and no real threat, we are all in for an unpleasant surprise. The center for disease reported last month that 1 in 88 American children is now affected by autism. A growing epidemic that has been linked to environmental causes.   Here is a list of the ten chemicals listed as autism causers (many of these found in our personal care products and home cleaning agents). The Natural Side of Neutrogena?

The Natural Side of Neutrogena? Hey OBVs! I’m fresh off the plane after a great weekend in Detroit spent at my aunt’s wedding and a few nights with the family enjoying the laughter, jokes and playful arguments. Since nowadays you can barely take anything on the plane, let alone your toiletries, I had the arduous task of minimizing my beauty routine and sacrificing for just a few key products during the span of my four days in Motown. It was the perfect time for me to tryout the new Neutrogena naturals line and discover what the new line was all about. Typically, I’ve dismissed mainstream brands in the past especially when they’ve suddenly “gone green”. But, I decided to give them a shot to see what improvements have been made and if...

I’ll Drink To That – 2 Beauty Boosting Drinks I’m Loving

I'll Drink To That - 2 Beauty Boosting Drinks I'm Loving My day usually consists of a lot of run around, meet ups, phone calls and a to-do list a mile high. While I work on better time management and find a clone, in the meantime, I get a fill on these amazing natural, organic and good-for-you beauty in a bottle drinks. I’m a purveyor of fresh-pressed juices and smoothies but I don’t always have it on me to spend $5+ on my daily juice addiction. How to pick out the best juices Look for great brands that have certified organic ingredients or who you can verify stands behind the integrity of their product. Added sugar is a big no-no so make sure the only sugar in your juice comes from the actual fruits and veggies. Try to find juices that will give you what you’re not getting...

The Ugly Side of Being So Damn Pretty in America

The Ugly Side of Being So Damn Pretty in America Maybe it’s the discussion I went to last night with Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley addressing poverty in America that had me feeling some type of way when I woke up this morning to write this post. Or maybe it’s my quest to discover a deeper, more connected sense of self and my purpose that has me contemplating exactly how my actions as an individual affect the outcome of others in this world and in this country. I don’t know what it is but there’s a clarity that has opened my eyes far beyond seeing OBV as a simple beauty blog on the bandwagon with every other “fashionista” working to get samples and a contract with a big brand to endorse their products. I’m talking about the value systems we...

5 Personal Care Products You Didn’t Know You Could Recycle

5 Personal Care Products You Didn't Know You Could Recycle Image Source I’m feeling a little more emotional about the environment these days. After observing the amount of crap I desperately feel like I need to maintain my daily existence — you know, razors, deodorant, jars and jars of body scrubs, toiletry bags, etc — I realized that the issue with protecting the planet isn’t necessarily about using more sustainable and biodegradable options. It’s really about using less, purchasing less and recycling or “up-cycling” more. I’m sure that we all could use a little bit more of a kick in the pants towards really taking charge of how our lives impact the planet. We’ve moved past recycling 101. We know the basics. Even a monkey could sort paper...
