With today being the first day of Black History Month I don’t want to start off the day with some cheesy statement or quote reminiscent of high school assemblies honoring Dr. King with a less-than-stellar rap song. This month is always filled with lots of advertisements and companies creating commercials to empower people of color by telling us how great we are slightly short of saying (*Viola Davis voice*) ”You is kind, you is smaaaaahhhht, you is impahwtent!” While I love the attention this month brings to many African Americans, it’s a little bitter sweet as I wish we got this amount of attention 365 days of the year. But I digress.
During this month I want to honor some of the most overlooked... DIY Skin Toners
Let me be 100 percent honest with you OBV readers. Until I went to esthiology school I had no idea what a toner was. Sure, I’d seen them around but to me they were nothing but water with fragrance that gave folks another excuse to drop $20 on an unnecessary beauty item. Fast forward years later and I’m a believer. But I’m still against spending way too much money on something you can create at home for almost Free.99.
Whether you’re a recession conscious beauty lover or simply feel good about mixing up your own TLC tonics from the kitchen, you’ll love creating toners to balance your skin’s ph, grab what your regular cleanser didn’t and shrink the appearance of large pores.

Playing dress up is one of those games you never out grow. Heels, cocktail dresses and fancy makeup are still part of my obsession and are admittedly on the verge of becoming a daily staple as I climb into my mid-twenties. What woman doesn’t want to look red-carpet worthy or to be told she’s drop-dead gorgeous? That’s what modern-day dress up does for me every time I stand tall in my bathroom mirror and pose for my latest Twitter avatar.
While I love adding to my look with the latest nail color or lipstick, I’ve been starting to think about the underlying psychology behind makeup, fashion, accessories and the like. This world of glamour many of us live in can also be mistaken for a self-centered need to fit... Riding Dirty: Sins Against Your Makeup
Since kindergarten I’ve been a professional sharer. I have no problem sharing clothes, shoes, food, my home and beauty tips with friends, family and strangers alike. But when it comes to my makeup, I’m a little more reserved, as we all should be when it comes to allowing others to use things that are applied to our mouth and eyes.
Are you riding dirty with old mascara, germ-infested eye shadow or lipstick that could be carrying tons of bacteria or viruses? When you’re not clean about your makeup you’re not being clean about your health.
Here are some of the cardinal rules to keeping your makeup safe and drama-free:
1. Toss after 6 months – Don’t hold on to old makeup. It gives me the... Vixen of the Week: Abby Omoruyi – Stylist & Blogger
She’s a friend I met last year in Harlem and although we’ve never had the opportunity to catch up again, every now and then we have a chance encounter to get to know each other in a new light. Abby’s impeccable style lights up the room when she walks in and her infectous smile makes you want to borrow what ever lip color she is rocking at the moment.

What do you love most about what you do?
Well I love the fact that I am able to call this my full time job, it’s very satisfying.
Why did you decide to get into your industry? What sparked your interest?
I’ve always loved anything... Giving Back Beauty – Recycling Your Old Cosmetics
Our cosmetics are like those terrible boyfriends we never knew were terrible to begin with. Sure they bring us joy, excitement and look good in public, but then they turn and can no longer give us that same zest they were able to in the beginning. And like a bad boyfriend we kick our old mascaras, shadows, bronzers and the like to the curb where they end up in a landfill to die but not perish.
The truth is, everyday cosmetic packaging accounts for nearly one-third of our landfill waste. While some of our empty (or nearly empty) product packaging can in fact be recycled. The more we know, the more we can do for our environment.
Here’s a few places you can drop off those old products to be re-used. Give back beauty and ditch letting... 99 Problems But A Perm Aint One
I was on twitter a few days ago and The Damn Salon re-mixed the popular Jay-Z song to join in the movement of what is the largest community of natural hair aficionados. Whether you’re rocking your hair straight or kinky I think many of us have different stories as to why we are living our hair journey the way in which we are.
Often times I get questioned about my hair, especially because I decided to go the loc route. I don’t have a dramatic story to tell about why I decided to grow my relaxer out and join the world of kinks and curls but I’ll walk you through the process:
