BET’s Reed Between The Lines Talks Hair + Acceptance in Recent Episode

BET's Reed Between The Lines Talks Hair + Acceptance in Recent Episode I wasn’t expecting much from the new sitcom “Reed Between the Lines” featuring my favorite style icon Tracee Ellis Ross. When it premiered last week, I loved the cutesy, safe feel of the show and compared the light-hearted conversations and issues to that of the Cosbys (no punches at the fact that Malcolm Jamal Warner does play the father on the the show). What I wasn’t expecting to see was an entire show dedicated to hair, beauty, self-image and stressing that long talked about issue that black women have with their hair. In the episode “Let’s Talk About Hair” Zoe Soul, who plays Ellis’ daughter, has to straighten her hair for a school play. When the cute boy she’s been crushing on...

Palm Rolling vs. Interlocking – What Do You Prefer For Lock Maintenance?

Palm Rolling vs. Interlocking - What Do You Prefer For Lock Maintenance? Source Last night, while working into the wee hours of the night on articles for other publications that I write for, I got distracted by a few tutorials on how to maintain dread locks. This November I will be four years strong as a locked goddess but let me tell you that even with a few years under my belt, I’m still learning how to properly care for my hair. I started my journey with human hair kinky twists, allowed the new growth to come in and gently palmed rolled the roots while snipping off the extended hair. While my hair is now shoulder length and somewhat healthy I do have the occasional breakage and thinning. After a trip to Good Hair Salon back in June, my stylist Zue showed me how to “interlock” my new growth...

Join Me Tomorrow On Twitter For Answers to Your Acne Problems I’m excited to announce that this Thursday I will be hosting a twitter party about  “getting clear skin naturally”. There’s a lot of hype on how to prevent and eliminate acne but I’ve found that treating the problem from the inside is the best way to keep acne at bay. I’ll be hosting this event in conjunction with AcnEase, a botanical therapeutic acne brand that is customized to help you prevent and eliminate acne. Please join me from 12pm PST (2pm CST/3pmEST) for a one hour chat on how you can get and maintain clear skin naturally with AcnEase. We will be using the hash tag #acnefree. I’ll be answering questions with the help of Dr. Agnes Olszewski of AcnEase as well as...

My Top Favorite Natural Makeup Lines for Brown Beauties Source Over the past few years I’ve come to appreciate makeup, the artistry, the ability to make your features stand out and of course the fact that I get to play! Thank goodness! Now that I’ve become an OBV, I (and you for that matter), have to be well aware of the many toxins in cosmetics that we apply daily without even realizing it. Check out Stacy Malkan, the creator of the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, in this interview talking about all of the potentially harmful ingredients in our every day products. Before you go straight into your bathroom and toss out your entire toiletries bag full of your favorite shadows and lip stains, check out my list of great natural makeup brands that are great for brown skin. You don’t...

Vixen of the Week: Carol Taplin – My Grandmother

Vixen of the Week: Carol Taplin - My Grandmother She was a beauty queen, dressed like Jackie Kennedy and helped the infamous Black Panthers start the breakfast program in lower income neighborhoods in Seattle. A woman with class, grace, poise and a hot tongue that could curse you like a sailor if the moment called for it, Ms. Carol Mae Taplin was an admirable woman and soul who gave herself to everything in life. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to meet her formally. She was my grandmother who eventually succumbed to the voices in her head that caused her to stop eating and enjoying the life she loved. Last night, a friend took me to a talk in town hall in downtown Seattle to hear Isabel Wilkerson speak – writer, New York Times correspondent, professor and the first black...

Black Women and Plastic Surgery: Would You Do It?

Black Women and Plastic Surgery: Would You Do It? Source For the past few months I’ve been doing some social media contracting work with a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. I probably know more about procedures, risks and preparation than I care to know. The entire experience has made me contemplate whether or not I would ever get plastic surgery. Would you? Whether it’s a bigger butt, a thinner nose, a flatter stomach or bigger breasts it seems as though our culture is just a tad bit obsessed with our looks and the ideal image of beauty. I’m surely guilty and must admit that I’ve have considered a boob job when I realized that the same bra I wore in high school is still relevant to my life (and my boobs for that matter) today. I’m a victim of vanity. I got...

How to Naturally Thicken Your Hair

How to Naturally Thicken Your Hair     Source My head is big. I’ve dealt with that fact my entire life and struggled with finding the right hats to add style without drawing attention to the circumference. Although my head is pretty voluptuous my hair is pretty thin. Keeping my hair natural has allowed me to keep up the appearance of thick hair but I’ve always envied those with hair to spare. I did everything to get that full mane including adding an egg to my shampoo and over-saturating my hair with conditioners all to end up in vain. Now, since my hair is locked, I’ve been able to focus on how to pair my normal hair care routine with natural treatments to keep my locks healthy, breakage-free and nurtured.   Here are a few quick ways to...
