Riding Dirty: Sins Against Your Makeup

dirty makeup

Since kindergarten I’ve been a professional sharer. I have no problem sharing clothes, shoes, food, my home and beauty tips with friends, family and strangers alike. But when it comes to my makeup, I’m a little more reserved, as we all should be when it comes to allowing others to use things that are applied to our mouth and eyes.

Are you riding dirty with old mascara, germ-infested eye shadow or lipstick that could be carrying tons of bacteria or viruses? When you’re not clean about your makeup you’re not being clean about your health.

Here are some of the cardinal rules to keeping your makeup safe and drama-free:

1. Toss after  6 months – Don’t hold on to old makeup. It gives me the heebie jeebies when I see someone pull out their old makeup drawer and fish through their old makeup. The labels have warn off, everything looks dirty and disgusting. Honey, toss it in the trash or recycle it and replace. Those products are probably so infested with bacteria that there may be a cure for cancer in them.

2. Sanitize before sharing- In esthetics school we were drilled on keeping our makeup sanitary between clients. I won’t play with display makeup or see just any makeup artist because I know what goes on and quite frankly, they can keep the bees and disease to themselves. Dip lipsticks in alcohol before and after use even if you’re passing it onto your best friend. Sharpen eye pencils before handing it off to that girl in the restroom you just met who can’t find her liner. Wipe down your shadows and blushes with a makeup sanitizing wipe after use to keep bacteria at bay. You may not see the germs but under a microscope they’re having a party you don’t want an invitation to.

3. Keep it cool – One of the quickest ways to breakdown the preservatives that keep makeup from turning bad is to keep them in direct sunlight. Store your items in a cabinet or closet to keep them from breaking down. Make sure all of your containers are sealed tight to keep your favorite beauty treats fresh.

Have you committed any sins against your makeup? Tell me your worst makeup story. Don’t worry. I won’t judge!

After watching a news report about dirty makeup I became so self conscious about sharing makeup and the bacteria that it can keep.I actually use BeautySoClean products. I think they are amazing! There’s wipes that I use on my lipsticks and mascara wands to help get rid of the bacteria also great to unclump the wands. I also use their cosmetic sanitizer mist which is really good for powder base cosmetics.
